Faces from the fresh fruit and vegetable wholesale markets of Europe

Clive Boursnell has been photographing people and their produce at London’s leading wholesale market for almost 60 years. Clive documented life at Covent Garden Market in the years before its relocation in 1974. And its more recent resurgence as New Covent Garden Market to bring top quality fruits and vegetables to a new customer base of fine restaurants and high-end greengrocers.

Fruitnet’s Chris White asked Clive Boursnell to pack up his cameras and join him on a tour of wholesale markets in Europe. Our project is to document the vital part that wholesale markets play in our fresh produce supply chain. And the role they play in bringing the finest fruits and vegetables to shoppers who crave a new way to buy that borrows so much from our collective past.
