Technology and management are the hot topics in the Communist Party of China (CPC), which pledged to improve the country’s agricultural sector with a broad range of technological and market-oriented reforms.

The CPC released a long document on Sunday detailing the Party’s plans to build agricultural infrastructure and modernise management practices, according to China View.

Quality control of produce was one of the key points in the paper, reflecting the series of food safety scandals that have tarred China’s international reputation recently.

The plan will strengthen supervision of the entire supply chain from farms, through transport, to distribution.

Subsidies to major agricultural production areas will also be increased, and preferential revenue policies will be put in place for companies that develop agricultural processing.

Transgenic technology is also a focus of the plan, tying in with other applications of biological technologies and high-yield plant varieties. A special project to develop new plant breeds as quickly as possible using genetic engineering would be established.

Water conservation, accurate information services and research support were also elements of the plan.

Cotton, sugar plants and potatoes will be given particular encouragement, according to the paper, along with the livestock industry.

The CPC also stated it would increase cooperation in the agricultural sector with Taiwan.
