Both the Committee for Horticulture and the Guernsey Growers' Association are holding joint and individual talks, the aim being to prepare a report for the island parliament next year.

It has been decided to bring forward this report by a year because of the rapid changes that have taken place in the flower industry.

All aspects of horticultural production will be considered, including transport and marketing.

As these joint meetings take place, the GGA executive is also meeting to see how it can address the issue of falling numbers of growers.

The state of the industry will become clearer when a statistical report is produced during September.

This should show a reduction in the number of growers in business, and certainly less space devoted to flowers such as roses and freesias.
