Flamingo's strength lies in sourcing cut flowers and pre-packed and prepared vegetables from its wholly-owned production base, Homegrown, in Kenya. Bedfordshire-based Zwetsloots is one of the UK's largest flower suppliers sourcing from both the Netherlands and Spain.

Under the agreement, Zwetsloots will continue to operate independently under the direction of its board which will be strengthened by Flamingo Holdings ceo Dicky Evans and Flamingo UK's md Martin Hudson.

'Our unique supply base should enhance Zwetsloots capabilities to provide a top-class service to its customers particularly as Flamingo Holdings recently acquired one of its major competitors, Sulmac, in Kenya to augment its supply base,' said Evans.

Flamingo has an annual turnover of £100million and Zwetsloots turnover is £55m. 'I believe that Flamingo's unrivalled experience in the production and supply of fresh produce and cut flowers in particular, coupled with its strong Kenyan base complements our expertise in the sourcing, packing and marketing of flowers in Europe,' said Zwetsloots md Mark Zwetsloot.
