Keith Ray, county archaeologist for Herefordshire, insists the mace would not have been found but for modern potato growing practices which 'are completely erasing archaeological sites that otherwise would be safely buried beneath the reach of agricultural cultivation.' During the past 10-15 years, supermarkets and processing customers' demands for perfectly formed potatoes, have led farmers to cultivate potatoes on land previously used for other arable crops, Ray said.
