Co-op was also first with Fairtrade bananas

freshinfo told you last week that the first Fairtrade grapes to beshipped to the UK through the South African Thandi initiative had arrived.

Now the Co-op has become the first UK retailer to put the product on its shelves. The grapes from Keboes Farms in the Orange River in Northern Cape are the latest Fairtrade-branded line to debut in the UK at the Co-op.

Oranges from the Thandi initiative also first appeared at the Co-op earlier this year and the retailer also lays claim to the first appearances of Fairtrade bananas, mangoes and pineapples on these shores.

The grapes are retailing in 500g punnets, at £2.99. The Co-op's Brad Hill commented: "We're committed to bringing Fairtrade to the mainstream and the launch of the grapes will enable UK consumers to enjoy fairly-traded grapes for the first time. As the number of Fairtrade fruit expands we hope to see increased sales which will in turn help growers to change their lives."
