Ring rot tests find infected samples

Defra has announced that tests have been completed on potato stocks at the Welsh farm where potato ring rot was discovered.

The results have found that two stocks associated with the variety “Provento” were infected. The remaining 20 stocks of other varieties of seed potatoes, at the outbreak farm have been found free from potato ring rot. Twenty samples were tested from each stock and each sample consisted of cores from 200tubers. Overall, 88,000 potatoes from the farm have been peeled, cored and tested over the last two weeks.

Defra is also co-ordinating with the authorities in The Netherlands and Spain to deal with the risks arising from this finding. The seed potatoes from the infected stock originated in The Netherlands and two consignments from the affected farm were exported to the Canary Islands before the infection was detected.
