The main aim is to protect endangered Italian varieties of stone and top fruit as well as nuts and other dried fruits and more minor species. CRA hopes that it will be able to collect in one place genetic material for all the relevant varieties grown in Italy. It has been financed by the farm ministry which has acquired a 30ha site for the project at Appia Antica regional park. The national collection already holds some 5,000 samples but it hopes to expand this to 13,000.
