Inter-governmental agency the International Organisation for Migration has signed an agreement with the government of Thailand which enables the organisation to send Thai workers to Israel, as requested by the government of Israel. This paves the way to send an additional 2,500 Thai workers to Israel starting on January 1, 2008.

Based on this new agreement, the government has taken steps to hasten the process and intends to grant permission for an immediate entry of 2,500 workers to assist farmers engaged in cultivating fresh produce for export. This move is based on an earlier government decision to increase the number of foreign workers in order to expand the volume of exports of fresh produce, especially in the vegetable, flower, fresh herbs and fruit sectors. Officials at the Israel Federation of Farmers have welcomed the decision. “The need for foreign workers is urgent, since crops cannot wait until new workers will be available,” they said in a statement.
