Nearly a fifth of Indian mango production has been affected by bad weather this year, according to government and industry officials.

India, the world’s largest producer of mangoes, is set to harvest around 10.92 million tonnes of fruit this year, 20 per cent down from the 13.74mt yield last season. Extreme cold and unseasonal rains have caused the downturn in volume.

Northern India was hit by a cold snap in January and February, while in March the regions of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh received heavy unseasonal rainfall. A storm in Uttar Pradesh, the second-biggest production region, affected the crop two weeks ago.

A senior official at the National Horticulture Board told Reuters India: “We have been compiling data from state governments. The arrivals and price trend is showing around a 20 per cent fall in production compared to last year.”
