The 'zebra' caulis are turning heads

New vegetable species, including the exotic purple cauliflower, will be presented by Lachish development centre for the first time as part of the AgroMashov international agricultural exhibition.

Among the new crop types on show, taking place 14-15 January in Israel, are local sweet peppers, eggplants and rare green and beige cauliflowers.

The new cylinder-shaped eggplants, which are 'zebra' striped purple and white, have culinary characteristics such as low oil absorbance and unique texture in cooking.

Also the Momordica, (a bitter melon popular in the Far East) will make an appearance for the first time in Israel, after studies of its consumption in Asia and South America have shown its high nutritional value.

The fruit is mostly used for food products, but also the leaves, roots and extracts are used for tea and researchers in the US have shown that chemicals in the plant are useful for delaying cell partition making it a valuable chemical for Cancer and HIV disease. It has also been proven to help lower blood pressure, relief for diabetes and aiding psoriasis patients.

The vegetables will be presented at the Innovation Booth at the Agro Mashov exhibition, alongside many other new and unique innovations from the world of fruit and vegetables.

Also in the exhibition the Vegetable, Fruit & Flower (VFF) exhibition will offer a variety of fresh produce, organic output, shipping and packing solutions.
