Strike action in India last week has disrupted supplies of fresh produce for both the international and domestic markets.

The strike by truckers from January 6 to 12 led to the loss of about 25 per cent of the produce already in the supply chain and an increase in prices of almost 100 per cent in some cases.

Truckers were calling for cheaper diesel and road toll exemptions and eventually called off their action once transport secretary Brahm Dutt agreed to chair a committee to look into their demands.

Separately, oil workers also took strike action for three days at the end of last week calling for better pay. Major cities were left desperately short of fuel at the pumps, with up to 80 per cent running dry in large population centres.
