Jay Rayner and The One Show team filming at Barfoots

Barfoots of Botley has featured on a primetime national BBC One TV show.

The exotic vegetable specialist featured as part of a report on The One Show by food critic Jay Rayner, who was exploring sustainable agriculture.

The film showed how Barfoots 'close the loop' with their waste to energy process; producing electricity to run their process operations and a nutrient-rich fertiliser for their crops.

In 2010, Barfoots became one of the first UK farming operations to build a bio-digester plant.

The on-site plant at its facility in Chichester processes waste products, producing methane, which in turn feeds an electricity power generator.

This generates 2.3 megawatts per hour, 24 hours a day, meaning that the business is entirely self-sufficient in energy for its factories, and can also power its fleet of electric cars across Barfoots' sites in Hampshire, Sussex and the Isle of Wight.

Julian Marks, MD at Barfoots, said: “We were delighted to showcase the renewable energy technologies, and innovative farming techniques we employ. Reducing our impact on the environment, developing sustainable farming systems and growing responsibly are at the heart of the way we do business.”

The programme aired on Friday, 29 August, and is available to view via the BBC iPlayer 'catch-up' service.
