Judge Medwyn Williams among some prize-winning brassicas

Giant beetroots and mammoth pumpkins were among entrants at this weekend’s giant vegetable competition, held in Aberglasney Gardens in west Wales.

Guest judge was Chelsea Flower Show winner and president of the National Vegetable Society, Medwyn Williams MBE, and classes included heaviest individual marrow, squash, cabbage and beetroot, as well as longest carrot and runner bean.

Among the winners were a prize-winning pumpkin weighing 123.30 kg, as well as a sunflower head with a diameter of 49cm.

Head gardener at Aberglasney, Joseph Atkin, said the competition attracted new growers as well as the “big guns” in the world of giant vegetable production.

Will Griffiths, of renewable energy firm and competition sponsor Good Life, said: “We are proud to sponsor Aberglasney’s Giant Vegetable Competition, as we hope it will inspire everyone to grow their own food, do their bit for the environment and hopefully take a step closer to living the Good Life.”

Head of marketing and communications at Aberglasney Gardens, Ellen Llewellyn, said she had got the idea for the competition from the display of giant vegetables at the RHS Autumn Show in Malvern.

'Anyone who's ever organised a competition will tell you it's not easy attracting competitors in the first couple of years but we've been exceptionally lucky to have had the support of some of the serious growers from further afield as well as locals who have put heart and soul into growing some monster vegetables,' she said.
