Tesco citrus supplier AMT Fruit has launched new clementine variety Octubrina to replace early season offerings Marisol and Arrufatina.

The new variety has a deep orange colour, and it is easy to peel and seedless if grown in isolation. It is available from mid October and is exclusive to Tesco.

An AMT statement said the first tonnage estimation from the two Octubrina farms is between 20 and 30 tonnes, including all sizes, and the majority of fruit should be on a 53 to 63mm banding.

“The variety has been developed in conjunction with the AMC Group’s leading varietal development programme Citrus Genesis and is one of a number of products set to be launched through the AMT Tesco partnership,” said Tesco GFS buyer, Freddie Hancock.

Head of technical at AMT, Naomi Pendleton, said: “We are delighted to be launching the Octubrina variety to the UK market this week.

“This new variety offers an upgrade for customers in both taste and appearance at an important time of year as we run in to the full flow of the traditional Spanish citrus season.”

AMT was established by parent company AMC, part of the Munoz Group.
