kiwi berries

UK-grown kiwi berries will be back on retail shelves in September.

Described as mini kiwis, the fruit are about the same size as a grape and generally sweeter than a regular kiwifruit, with sugar levels ranging from 14-29 per cent.

Inside they are very similar to their larger cousin, emerald green in colour with small black seeds and with a typical rayed pattern inside, but are regarded as ideal for snacking as they are ready to eat.

The fruit, native to northern China, Korea, Siberia and Japan, has been produced by BerryWorld grower George Leeds of Withers Farm in Ledbury, who first planted in 2008.

Leeds' kiwi berries will be available in September in selected Waitrose, Tesco, Ocado, Co-operative and Booths stores.

Kiwi berries is one of the smallest categories at UK retail, with sales of just £18,000 and volumes of 2,000kg in the last year [Kantar Worldpanel, 52 w/e 24 May 2015].
