A popular fruit and veg shop that had been forced to close has reportedly been given permission to trade from two stalls in the town centre instead.

Woody's, on the High Street in Cheltenham, was forced to close due to a major development in the town, Gloucestershire Echo reports.

With no suitable alternative premises in the town centre, the shop had been faced with the prospect of making staff redundant.

But it has now been given permission from Cheltenham Borough Council's Licensing Committee to position two stalls in prime positions in the town.

Adrian Wood, a director of Woody's, told the Echo: 'Customers were asking where we were moving to and saying they were going to miss us, but for a long time we had nothing to tell them. We were worried we wouldn't get the permission we needed for the stalls and had talked to staff about how we were being forced to make them redundant.

'The stalls are going to be brilliant and the staff are really looking forward to it. We're getting some really nice ones made by a local firm which makes stalls for farmers' markets. They're going to look fantastic and should be a real destination for customers. Hopefully we might pick up some new customers too!'

Woody's has been trading since 1991, and also has stores in Tewkesbury and Gloucester.

Wood runs the company with his wife and fellow director, Nicola Wood.
