Golden kiwis

Waitrose's golden kiwis are sold ripe and ready to eat

Sales of Zespri's SunGold kiwis have risen by 195 per cent since January, Waitrose has reported.

Golden kiwis, which are rich in vitamins and minerals and only contain 50 calories per fruit, are part of Waitrose 1, the supermarket's new premium range.

The skin of the fruit is smooth and the golden yellow flesh is sweet and juicy, Waitrose said.

Waitrose nutritionist Moira Howie said: “One golden kiwi matches bananas for potassium and has twice as much vitamin Cas traditional green kiwis. This makes the fruit a great choice to meet your recommended daily vitamin C intake,” she added.

Greg Sehringer, exotic fruit buyer at the supermarket, said: “Golden kiwis are versatile, healthy and best of all, delicious.

“They are perfect in summer salads, a breakfast smoothie or even as a light dessert or snack. The beautiful golden colour and fresh sweet taste of a golden kiwi fruit is guaranteed to liven up any meal.”
