Tilbury port

Amazon's new depot is adjacent to the Port of Tilbury

Amazon is to open its 13th depot in the UK with a new site at the Port of Tilbury, Essex, due to open in Spring 2017.

The online giant said it is expanding to meet customer demand, increase product selection and support more third party marketplace sellers.

Equipped with advanced robotics technology, the new site is located at the London Distribution Park at the Port of Tilbury.

Group chief executive of Forth Ports Charles Hammond said: “This is great news for the port and for the Thurrock area. We are delighted that Amazon will be based at London Distribution Park.

“By basing itself at London’s major port, Amazon will save time and money and capitalise on our prime south east location and our excellent, well established logistical connections to the UK market.”

Amazon will begin recruiting for new positions at the depot later this summer, including roles in operations, engineering, HR and IT. The company will also open a new London office in 2017 with a total capacity for 5,000 people.

Amazon currently has ten fulfilment centres in the UK, including two in Doncaster and one each in Dunfermline, Dunstable, Gourock, Hemel Hempstead, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Rugeley and Swansea Bay, with two more set to open in Manchester and Coalville.
