Abel & Cole and MyFresh are helping those suffering from food poverty

Produce firms MyFresh and Abel & Cole have donated a food packing line as part of a new partnership with Hull's Goodwin Development Trust.

Parent company William Jackson Food Group (WJFG) has supported the Trust for several years, but following interest from several graduates in the subsidiary businesses, the company has now donated a packing line to help make bespoke food parcels.

MyFresh and Abel & Cole will also donate food and provide leaflets on cooking and food storage, while the new packing line will provide jobs. The new programme is being offered by Hull and East Riding Citizens Advice Bureau and aims to reach people suffering extreme food poverty in the area under a new scheme called Helping People in Crises.

WJFG’s chief executive Norman Soutar said: “This project has been a brilliant example of people working together to help others. Our own businesses have all pulled together; our relationship with The Goodwin Trust is even stronger and supported by more people from within WJFG and we have some new ideas for further collaboration with the Trust.

“What’s even more special is that four graduates from our development programme have led the final stages of the packing line project and have done a great job. We’re really proud of everyone who has made the project possible.”

Clive Darnell, head of development at the Goodwin Development Trust, said: “In addition to donating a packing line, the WJFG businesses have supplied us with food, 500 boxes and recipe/food storage leaflets so we can give people a helping hand when they most need it, but also advice and guidance to help them learn to cook healthily from scratch, storing and using ingredients in the best way possible.

“The boxes and leaflets will be reused and the packing line helps our volunteers to work more efficiently. We are also now looking to work with WJFG to use the packing line to train unemployed people, giving them skills which will hopefully help them secure employment.”
