A new trade deal could boost Colombian fresh produce imports to the UK

Fresh produce trade between the UK and Colombia could grow after Brexit, according to the country’s president Juan Manuel Santos.

Manuel Santos, who was interviewed on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show yesterday (6 November), said a new agreement could be better than Colombia's current free trade deal with the EU.

Speaking to Marr, he also said there was an opportunity for greater UK trade with emerging markets.

The Colombian president is in the UK on a state visit, and last week met Prime Minister Theresa May at Downing Street.

He told the BBC: 'What I said to Prime Minister May is, 'listen, we are ready to simply have a free trade agreement with the UK and have the same conditions or even improved'.”

But he warned no negotiations would take place until the UK had confirmed its relationship with the EU.
