Strawberries

British strawberry growers are celebrating a 'tremendous' crop on the back of optimal growing conditions.

Home-grown strawberries are now in peak supply and available in abundance in supermarkets. Thanks to the good weather, the fruit is said to be of a particularly high quality.

Nicholas Marston, chairman of British Summer Fruits, said:“Now is the time for people to buy and enjoy British strawberries. The fruit is now at its very best and can be bought at super values from all retailers and shops.”

More than 133,000 tonnes of strawberries were sold in the UK in the past year, according to Kantar, with shoppers spending more than £659 million on the fruit, a seven per cent increase on 2018.

Dr Emma Derbyshire, British Summer Fruits’ public health nutritionist, explained:'Berries are a fantastic healthy snack that offer numerous health benefits. Not only is the whole strawberry rich in antioxidants, but the red fleshy part is also abundant in vitamin C. In fact, eating just nine strawberries (108g) can provide all of your recommended daily vitamin C intake.”
