Higgins Group, a leading potato supplier in Europe, is expanding its global operations with the appointment of an Australian agent to market two of its varieties down under.
In a recently finalised agreement, Western Potatoes joins Higgins’ group of international agents, marketing the Horizon and Smile potato cultivars across the country.
Horizon, bred and controlled by Higgins, is a high-yielding crisping variety suitable for medium term storage. It grows well in hot conditions and has been trialled in Turkey, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, making it ideally suited to the Australian climate.
Smile, to which Higgins has a worldwide right, is so-called because of as white smile mark on its pink skin and was awarded a Royal Horticultural Society Bi-Centenary gold medal. Higgins says its versatility as a chipping, boiling, baking and roasting potato makes it popular as a commercial and domestic variety.
“I am confident that Western Potatoes will make great inroads into our sales plans for Australia and we look forward to working with Brian Dickson [Western Potatoes ceo] and his team,” said David Higgins.
