MoU to facilitate exports of fresh Chilean fruit enters into force
Chile’s Agriculture Ministry has announced that a new Memorandum of Understanding regarding supplementary phytosanitary requirements for the export of fresh Chilean fruit to China has entered into force.
The agreement gives Chile faster, more competitive access to one of its most important markets.
It includes an expansion of packaging options for cherries and stonefruit from areas regulated for the Mediterranean fruit fly; the extension of in-transit cold treatment in ship holds; the incorporation of new cold treatment protocols based on international phytosanitary standards; and the simplification of shipment identification requirements – including the elimination of demands related to pallet inspection certificates – amongst other measures.
Chile’s agriculture minister, Jaime Campos commented: “This agreement represents a significant step forward for the export sector, as it will allow for the optimisation of logistical and operational processes, grant greater flexibility to the industry, and facilitate compliance with the phytosanitary requirements agreed upon with China, thereby strengthening the competitiveness of Chilean fruit in that market”.
