Indonesia looks set to emulate a move by Abu Dhabiand establish a national cold storage warehouse for fresh produce.
The Jakarta Globe has reported the country’s federal government has engaged state-procurement agency Bulog to develop the large-scale facility, which would help to extend the supply window for domestically produced fruit and vegetables and stabilise prices.
Indonesian trade minister, Thomas Lembong, told the local reporters the project would cost in the vicinity of US$207.4m, although he did not divulge where the warehouse would be located or when it would open.
Earlier this month Indonesian President Joko Widodo visited a similar facility in Abu Dhabi, which is being used to provide a steady supply of fresh produce and meat to the Middle Eastern city.
Over recent years the Indonesiangovernment has moved to bolster and protect its domestic production of fruit and vegetables through a series of import restrictions and a quota system, which has been the source of contention among many global suppliers.
