Indonesia’s durian industry reaches a new milestone

Indonesia has sent its first direct shipment of frozen durian to China, with the 48-tonne consignment leaving Citereup, Bogor, West Java, on 15 December.
According to a report from Antaranews, head of the Indonesian Agricultural Quarantine Agency (Barantin), Sahat M Panggabean said the inaugural shipment was valued at Rp5.1bn (US$305,971).
The frozen durian export protocol between Indonesia and the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC) was signed on 25 May 2025 and Panggabean said it represented a great opportunity for Indonesia’s durian industry.
“This marks the realization of Indonesia’s first frozen durian export to China, the result of a long process that required considerable time and resources,” Panggabean stated in Barantin’s official statement.
Previously, Indonesian durian exports to China were shipped to neighboring countries that processed and repackaged the fruit before sending it to the Chinese market. According to Barantin, Indonesia exported 10,162 tonnes of durian in various forms from January to November 2025,
Secretary General of the Indonesian Durian Plantation Association (Apdurin), Aditya Pradewo said demand and pricing were much stronger in China than in Indonesia’s domestic market. The direct route would also reduce logistics costs and provide other benefits for farmers and exporters, Pradewo added.
Indonesia has also been in discussions with China on securing access for fresh durians, with progress made earlier in 2025.
