China’s second largest e-commerce company is partnering with Japan’s Mitsubishi Chemical to grow vegetables.

The companies are investing ¥800m (US$7.16m) in a hi-tech vegetable factory in Beijing’s Tongzhou district, according to Nikkei.

The partnership is’s first venture into growing produce, with Mitsubishi to oversee the selection of vegetables to be grown, the packaging, traceability and food safety.

According to the Asian news site, is looking to set up further vegetable factories in Shanghai, Guangzhou and further afield to supply Chinese consumer with fresh, safe vegetables.

The announcement of the joint venture comes after trialled marketing produce growing in a Mitsubishi Chemical factory in Shanghai.
