Authorities detail the growth of the country’s durian trade over the past seven years
Malaysia’s Agriculture and Food Security Ministry has revealed the country has exported 115,359 tonnes of durian products worth M$6.37bn (US$1.51bn) over the past seven years.
According to a report from The Star, the Ministry said further growth is on the horizon, fuelled by trade with the China market.
“The Ministry, through the Agriculture Department, is committed to exploring new opportunities and expanding our markets to Taiwan and Peru as well,” the Ministry told Malaysian parliament.
“Export values are forecasted to reach M$1.8bn by 2030 and involve exports of up to 69,000 metric tonnes.”
Malaysia now exports fresh and frozen durians as well as durian pulp and paste to China. Exports have grown on the back of gaining access for each of these products.
In 2018, only durian pulp and paste could be exported to China and 3,555 tonnes worth M$202mn were shipped.
Malaysia began exporting frozen durians in June 2019, with exports amounting to 3,177 tonnes and valued at M$143mn.
The increasing trend of durian exports to China continued over the years, with 13,401 tonnes of frozen durian, worth M$1.27bn, exported in 2022, as well as 5,703 tonnes of pulp and paste.
In August 2024, Malaysia began exporting fresh durian to China, sending 501 tonnes over the remaining months of the year.
As of June 2025, fresh durian exports to China have increased to 773 tonnes, exceeding a value of M$5mn, with 3,599 tonnes of frozen durian and 5,241 tonnes of pulp and paste exported as well.
