New centre can help growers meet all the international standards required for export

Malaysia has launched a new durian export hub designed to enhance the fruit’s supply chain and help smaller growers ship internationally.

According to a report from Bernama, the Malaysia Durian (Tropical Fruit) Trade and Export Centre (MADTEC) – developed by Tropika Makmur Manufacturing – was opened at the end of November. Agriculture and food security minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu welcomed the new facility, which he said provided export access to all of the country’s durian industry.

“With internationally certified processing facilities, farmers can now make use of complete processing infrastructure without having to bear high costs to build their own factories. Their produce can be processed according to export standards more efficiently and systematically,” Mohamad said at the centre’s opening ceremony.

“I hope MADTEC can send a clear message that the success of Malaysia’s durian industry must be enjoyed fairly by all players, big or small.”

MADTEC is strategically located near Kuala Lumpur International Airport, providing access to logistics infrastructure. It can also provide all the necessary requirements for export from treatment to packaging, allowing exporters to comply with international standards aand maintain premium quality.

Mohamad said the country’s durian industry continued to grow, shipping nearly 44,000 tonnes worth RM1.2bn (US$290mn) in 2024.

“Malaysian durians are synonymous with premium quality, distinctive aroma and superior varieties such as Musang King or Raja Kunyit, Black Thorn or Duri Hitam, and D24,” he said.

“Global demand also increases each year, with China being the largest importer.”
