Leading logistics provider Shanghai Pudong International Airport Cargo Terminal (PACTL) is catering for rising perishable cargo volumes at one of China’s busiest transport hubs.

The company is in the final stages of building a new perishable centre at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, with the state-of-the-art facility providing a range of temperature control conditions for handling perishables and pharmaceuticals.

The 3,5002m centre features a feature a deep freeze area capable of reaching -18oc, several cool storage facilities and an ambient temperature storage zone. It will also provide an acceptance area with separate x-ray machines, a 1,5002m handling area and a specially designated delivery sector.

Markus Knickmann, manager of strategic business development at PACTL, said Shanghai Pudong International Airport had developed into a top ten destinations for nearly all PACTL’s airline customers, hence the need for expansion.

“It’s our job to support the efforts of our customers by providing state-of-the-art infrastructure as the basis for competitive products; this will allow them to gain a better position in the relevant markets,” Knickmann explained.

The new centre is expected to be operational by July 2015. With the option of extending the facility by an additional 5502m of storage space, PACTL’s vice president, Lutz Grzegorz, said the centre would have the capacity to continue catering for the growing airfreight trade.

“As most of our airline clients are offering and further developing sophisticated perishable and pharmaceutical services, we expect the recent growth in our perishable and pharmaceutical business to continue,” Grzegorz said.
