Pakistan’s potato exports to Russia have been hit by disruptions at Port Said in Egypt due to the nation’s recent political unrest.

Exporters were hoping to send 200,000 tonnes of potatoes to the Russian market this season, but say that figure may need to be shifted down to 150,000 tonnes.

Numerous shipments at Port Said have been delayed for weeks, reported Pakistani newspaper The Express Tribune, which has raised fears further orders may be cancelled.

The delays, caused by Egypt’s recent political upheavals, have Russian importers reviewing their trade options, according to Aslam Pikhali, former senior vice president of industry body the All-Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters, Importers and Merchants Association.

Fruit and vegetable exports to Bahrain have also been affected by delays at Port Said, added Mr Pikhali.

Pakistan’s potato exports to Russia so far this season have hit 75,000 tonnes.
