Authorities implent new measures to enhance the quality of southern fruit as the region looks to match the success of durian producers in the country’s eastern provinces
Durian growers in southern Thailand, with the help of Thai authorities, have implemented new measures to enhance the quality of their fruit and match the output of other key production areas.
According to a report from China Daily, durian plantations in southern Thailand have expanded rapidly in recent years. The eastern province of Chanthaburi produces over hald of Thailand’s durian but data from the Department of Agricultural Extension (DOAE) shows durian production area in southern Thailand has increased from 101,000ha in 2020 to 139,000ha in 2025.
To help support industry the DOAE has implemented eight stringent measures to promote high-quality fruit production, ensuring both quality and safety to meet export standards.
These measures cover the entire supply chain, from orchards to markets, especially during peak harvest seasons. Intensive farmer training on Good Agricultural Practices has been implemented and digital technology has aslo been applied to analyse data and systematically manage risks.
“Farmers also need to learn strict orchard hygiene protocols and pest surveillance to build buyer confidence,” said DOAE director-general Peeraphan Korthong
“Moreover, we have worked to strengthen farmer-exporter networks and drive value-added products such as frozen and freeze-dried durian to meet the growing international demand for premium-quality fruit.”
These measures were highlited at a recent seminar designed to boost confidence in southern Thai durians for the global market. The seminar hosted Chinese consul general in Songkhla Wang Zhijian and overseas buyers who were invited to visit some high-quality durian orchards.
