Plans are afoot to completely regenerate the wholesale market in Liverpool and create a multi-million pound food hub on the site.

A spokesman for Liverpool City Council told FPJ: “We are exploring options for a food hub based at the fruit and vegetable market at Edge Lane. The project, which will be delivered by Regeneration Liverpool, a partnership between the city council and Sigma Investments, is at an early stage but has been endorsed by the council’s cabinet.”

Local sources at the market, which sits on a nine-acre site, said that the proposal would see the city’s meat and fish wholesale markets relocated to Edge Lane and a longstanding local food manufacturing business also moved to the hub.

The Regenerations Liverpool joint venture was set up to use land owned by the city council in profitable ways so that funds can be reinvested into other projects.

The new market would represent a £40 million investment, according to local sources, and a planning application is expected to be submitted in the autumn of this year for work to start next summer.
