Albert Bartlett unveils Purple Majesty

Albert Bartlett made a quirky unveiling in Berlin last week in shape of its new potato, Purple Majesty.

The Scottish firm has the European rights to the distinctive variety, which was developed in Colorado and will launch in the UK in the autumn.

The premium potato will be grown in Scotland, having come through variety trials last year.

John Hicks, marketing manager at Albert Bartlett, said: “We have tried a lot of coloured varieties, but Purple Majesty tastes good and is high in health properties such as antioxidants - it will be great for high-end or niche restaurants and for children, who will enjoy things like purple mash.

“But we know the variety could have a polarising effect, so consumers will either accept it or not. We have enough volumes to see how people will react to the variety, but it takes time to grow volumes and this is one of the frustrations of new launches.”
