Aldi Christmas food donations 2018

Aldi donated almost 800,000 meals worth of unsold fresh food to UK charities on Christmas Eve, the German discounter has announced.

More than 500 charities across the UK were matched with a local Aldi store and received a food donation, includingfruit and vegetables, fresh meat and fish, and bread.

In total, Aldi donated 335 tonnes of unsold fresh food, equivalent to 798,000 meals.

Fritz Walleczek, managing director of corporate responsibility, said:“By donating a range of fresh food we’ve been able to support charities in providing warm and healthy festive meals this festive season.

“The feedback has been overwhelming, and we’re delighted that we’ve been able to go above and beyond with our donations this year and reach so many people in the communities we work in across the UK.”

The Christmas initiative was an extension of Aldi’s existing food donations partnerships. The supermarket works directly with FareShare and Company Shop throughout the year and has also pledged to reduce operational food waste by 50 per cent by 2030 as part of the Friends of Champions 12.3 network.
