HortResearch scientists in the apple gene mapping group have found a way of using gene markers so that they can be certain which variety an apple belongs to. The NZ research team led by Dr Erik Rikkerink has searched for and found gene markets to provide a genetic marker system which is able to distinguish between different varieties.

There are now gene markers for more than 200 apple varieties, all recorded on a database. The new system provides a speedy way to identify plant material therefore making it possible to prove illegal propagation, import or export of plant material.

This will be a boon for growers and apple plant breeders in the competitive commercial world of the 21st century as producers will be able to get a DNA fingerprint for valuable new apple cultivars very early on in the production process.
