Asda has used recycled plastic bottles to pave one of its car parks.
The supermarket took 90,000 bottles that would have gone to landfill or incineration, and used them to create a tarmac for resurfacing its Wakefield store car park, in Yorkshire.
The plastic from the water bottles were ground into tiny pieces and mixed together with asphalt to create the surface, according to Asda, with plans to replicate the process across other stores.
Daniel Hargreaves, construction manager at Asda said: “This is a really innovative way to use plastic which cannot otherwise be recycled and it demonstrates our commitment to looking for sustainable alternatives all across the business.
'We’re hoping with the success of this role out in our Wakefield store, we will be able to look at using this exciting and environmentally friendly approach to car parks across the Asda estate”.
Tesco and Sainsbury’s have both installed bottle recycling schemes in the past year in a bid to tackle plastic pollution and create a closed loop of plastic use.
Asda say the new car park is part of its commitment to use less and recycle more plastic across the business. In the past year the retailer says it has removed 6,500 tonnes of plastic from own brand products.
