British & Brazilian relocates in AG Thames shake up

Fresh produce importer British & Brazilian (B&B) is to undergo a major re-structure.

Parent company AG Thames Holdings has announced that management responsibility for its melon, grape and stonefruit firm will transfer internally to its specialist product companies, Chingford Fruit and Grapes Direct.

AG Thames plans to move the Yaxley, Cambridgeshire-based business to Kent - where its sister companies are based - “in time”, with the grape activity moving to its deciated business Grapes Direct in Rochester.

Its melon and stonefruit activity is to be relocated to Chingford Fruit at Crayford but the B&B name will continue to be used.

On the subject of staffing, Gary Linsell, managing director of AG Thames Fruit, told FPJ: “We are unable to confirm [what changes will occur in Yaxley] at this stage as we are about to begin the consultation with all staff to work out the best possible outcome for all involved. However, we are working very hard to ensure staff are either redeployed within the group, as we understand with the transfer of business there will be a number of vacancies available. We are also working very closely with local employment agencies to assist affected staff into work elsewhere.”

Solstor, the group’s logistics business also based at Yaxley, remains unaffected.

Linsell added: “Each of our customers will continue to have a dedicated team on the account, with their own customer’s needs at heart. Whether this is at our site in Kent, or if it were to continue in Yaxley, there will be no change in the level of professionalism we provide as a company. All customers are fully aware and supportive of the situation and we are working with them to ensure the best possible results for all parties.

“This is a positive opportunity for B&B to strengthen its offer to its key customers by utilising the core strengths within the group. In time, relocation is envisaged to make use of its product specific facilities at the group’s sites in Kent.”
