Sharp Interpak was showcasing its new c-Low punnet for mushrooms at Fruit Logistica.

The c-Low punnet offers a 23 per cent lower carbon footprint than equivalent PP mushroom punnets and is available in the UK and in continental Europe.

Marketing manager David Riley told freshinfo: “The idea is to gradually lessen our dependency on virgin petrochemical content in punnets.”

The packaging specialist was also showcasing its new SPS Air technology, a soft-fruit punnet with lateral vents in the base that allows air flow throughout the punnets, even when stacked.

Riley said: “This offers 20 per cent less condensation in packs and the punnet can be heat-sealed or lidded. The SPS Air is unique and there is nothing else like it on the market. Retailers are looking for longer shelf life on soft fruit and growers want better air flow for their product.”

The SPS range, launched last month in the UK market and on display in Berlin, is available in five different depths of punnet, without lateral vents. The range offers better clarity for the fruit than the SPE range, which was available in the UK.

Sharpak has also recently launched the SPF500 range on the continent. Riley said: “Suppliers wanted a punnet for continental Europe that was affordable and configured to the European market. There are five different depths and a full height and half height lid and it cannot be heat sealed.

“The long-awaited SPS range in the UK and the SPF500 range on the continent address a lot of issues. The environmental agenda is still there and we are looking at up to 80 per cent recycled content in our punnets.”
