The CBI has reported that retailers have been hit by poor weather as it published a survey showing a slowdown in sales growth.

Latest figures reported for March show that sales grew at their slowest rate for six months, which were below expectations.

The survey was conducted between March 2 and 17 showing underlying growth edged down over the past month but remains stronger than the average of the past 10 years.

The CBI has said that forecasts for April remain strong, suggesting that the slowdown is a blip rather than a sign of an end to buoyant sales growth.

John Longworth, newly appointed chairman of the DTS Panel, said: “Many retailers blame the atrocious weather in March for a dip in sales. However, consumer confidence remains strong so stores will be hoping for some good trading over the Easter holiday weekend."
