China holds key to apple future

The latest issue of the World Apple Report forecasts that global apple supply will return to 2009 levels during 2011-12, but much depends on the Chinese crop.

“What happens in China could be a major factor in determining how much the world crop exceeds the 2010 level,” the report, published by Belrose in Washington State.

“Our best estimate is that China will produce 33 million tonnes of apples in 2011, up 10 per cent from the reduced crop of 2010. “ The report estimates that output in 2011 is likely to be close to 2009’s record volumes of 72mt.

“The swing in China alone could account for the change in total world production,” according to the report. “However, reliable Chinese sources differ in their estimates of past and current Chinese apple crops. It will be several months before the full extent of the Chinese crop is known.”
