Co-op marks integration of Southern Co-op to strengthen the group’s food retail estate with an additional 173 stores
Convenience retailer Co-op has completed the transfer and absorption of Southern Co-op and added a further 173 food stores to the main group.
The Southern Co-op is now a wholly owned subsidiary of the group, but will continue to trade as Southern Co-op, following a decision by members in May.
The transaction remains subject to Competition and Markets Authority approval, with both co-operatives continuing to operate separately until then.
The outcome of the review is expected later in 2026. Subject to approval, integration plans will then progress.
“Today marks a historic milestone for both societies and the wider co-operative movement,” said Co-op interim CEO, Katie Allum.

The Co-op currently operates 2,300 food stores, before the addition of the Southern stores, as well as a wholesale business, coffee shops and funeral chain.
