The Compass Group has announced it is to buy railway station catering businesses in Germany and China.
The contract caterer is to buy Mitropa from German railway Deutsche Bahn for around 40 million euros. The German operation has sales of approximately 120 million euros a year. The deal is currently under consideration by the German Federal Cartel Office.
Compass has also entered a 15-year joint venture with the Shanghai Railway Administration. A new company Shanghai Rail Gourmet will start serving around 2,500 meals a day from April 18 on four newly designed high-speed trains linking Shanghai and Beijing.
