North-east florist Diana Kaye was awarded New Covent Garden Market Retail Florist of the Year at Re:fresh 2010.

The business has two branches, in Yarm and Newcastle, which focus on providing an innovative range at an affordable price.

Kaye has completely revamped her business model to turn a loss-making period around so that in the last financial year, total turnover rose by 40 per cent. The business has embarked on an ambitious five-year plan to double its turnover to around £750,000 a year.

The plan is for the stores to build on their unique selling points, which include having a range of “pick up and goes” and a strong brand image that will give strengthen Kaye’s typical daily range of more than 35 flower and more than 10 plant lines.

The Yarm store has has a strong corporate arm to its business, with clients including Middlesborough Football Club, The Co-operative Funeralcare and BMW.

The Newcastle store is situated in the entrance of the city’s flagship Fenwicks department store, on the second busiest thoroughfare in the country after London’s Oxford Street.
