Prominent strawberry grower Peter Wensak has told the Daily Express that the Elsanta variety may be dwindling due to climate change.
“There is no doubt that it is getting hotter and hotter, and the strawberry will eventually reach a point where it goes into survival mode for the sake of the species,” Wensak, of Polehouse Nursery, told the paper.
He added that he was being forced to hunt for Mediterranean varieties that can cope with hotter summers - and has even taken trips around the world in his search for improved types.
