Asda can once again bask in the title of Britain's cheapest supermarket, as it landed the prize for the 10th successive year.

The Leeds-based chain came up with the the lowest average price for a basket of shopping, according to the Grocer, which bases its findings on a 33 common groceries.

Asda was the cheapest destination for shoppers in 32 of the 50 weeks covered by the 2006-7 survey. Tesco, spent 10 weeks as the cheapest retailer.

Asda's average price for a basket of shopping was £45.23 compared, with Tesco's at £45.98.

Morrisons was named best for customer service, while its prices were third lowest at an average £46.48.

Sainsbury's came in fourth followed by Somerfield and Waitrose was the most expensive at £53.16 per average basket of groceries.

The cheapest tag is revered amongst the mass media and consumers. Richard Clarke, news editor of the Grocer, said low prices are a "powerful tool" in attracting shoppers. However, it is not necessarily thought of in the same light by supermarket suppliers.
