Extremaduran plum crop bounces back

Spanish plum volumes are expected to rebound this summer, following a low-yielding season in 2006.

Afruex, the stonefruit grower association in Extremadura, Spain’s main plum production region, predicts that volumes are likely to reach 120,000 tonnes, compared to 40,000t last year.

“The season is forecast to begin around May 20-22,” said Miguel ángel Gómez of Afruex. “Growing conditions in Extremadura have been good and, in spite of a bout of cloudy, wet weather at the moment, daytime temperatures have maintained 21°C. Trees are in blossom now.” The first variety to arrive in the UK will be Red Beauty.

Extremadura’s total stonefruit crop, covering plums, peaches, nectarines and cherries, is expected to stand at 300,000t.
