A new business founded by the man who invented a precursor to Twitter is looking to increase food supply chain efficiency.

Entrepreneur Ed Dowding (pictured) is looking to fight back against the “oligarchy” of the major multiples and create streamlined, profitable and sustainable chains.

Dowding runs Sustaination, a people-funded company and online service, which makes it easy and profitable for food businesses to find each other, talk and trade. The organisation is using crowdfunding site peoplefund.it to attempt to raise £35,000 of its desired £150,000 cash flow. It is a similar strategy to that of crowd-run football team Ebbsfleet United.

Sustaination, and its sister site It’s Not a Supermarket, claim to be a “dating site for local food” and are appealing to farmers, distributors, restaurants, schools and supply chain members to team up on deliveries and provide a free network for members.

It is run by Dowding in conjunction with co-creator Richard Livsey and former Soil Association marketer Georgia Catt. Dowding and Livsey are re-partnering for the first time since creating “an early version of Twitter” for London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority.

Dowding told FPJ: “We have a lot of experience in creating web applications and this is a really exciting project. The supermarkets were ahead of their time in being able to use Clubcard data. If we can get a similar data bank we can build sustainable supply chains.”
