The FTA has launched its Driver Fatigue campaign with a new leaflet Driver Fatigue: An FTA Guide for Transport Managers.

The guide provides essential information on the effects of fatigue on performance and advice on countering fatigue. Its publication coincides with national Road Safety Week.

David Jamieson, road safety minister, said: 'Tiredness is a serious issue for all drivers, whether they are a trained and experienced lorry driver working regulated hours, or a private car user. Drivers and their managers need to be aware of the very real dangers of falling asleep at the wheel – some 15-20 per cent of the accidents on monotonous roads, such as motorways, can be attributed to driver sleepiness. I therefore welcome this campaign and fully support the work being done by the FTA, AWAKE and the police to raise the profile of the issue with the transport industry.' The FTA's series of guides have been produced with fatigue management consultancy AWAKE, the Loughborough Sleep Research Centre, the Association of Chief Police Officers and the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland.
