Ghana responds to Fairtrade demand

Ghanian producers are hoping to cash in on the boom in demand for Fairtrade, with their ongoing investment of energy and capital in sustainable pineapple production.

Swiss company HPW Fairtrade saw sales for its Ghanian partners’ produce increase by more than 50 per cent from 2005 to 2006, with 14,000 tonnes of extra-sweet pineapples planned for export in 2007.

“This makes us the second-largest and indeed most successful producers’ concern in Ghana”, the company’s md Hans Peter Werder claimed.
